Into Uncertainty begins by asking why people willingly step into danger. It becomes a larger meditation on what happens when certainty becomes the condition for living.

This feature length nonfiction adventure film that embeds viewers inside a real, unscripted expedition, following two emergency management professionals as they risk everything to confront the psychology of why people willingly step into danger while they complete a 10-day Baja expedition. Weeks before departure, both are deployed to support massive wildfires threatening Los Angeles. Their nights disappear into sixteen-hour shifts, and their build schedule collapses. They arrive at the Baja starting line with an unfinished truck, improvised equipment, inadequate supplies, and barely any rest. The expedition that was supposed to be carefully controlled begins in chaos.

What follows is an exploration into the psychology of risk, not observed from a safe distance, but through unscripted immersion.

Director Biography - Ryan Christen

Ryan G. Christen is an independent filmmaker, media producer, former Firefighter Battalion Chief, and disaster-response leader whose work explores the point where preparation ends and uncertainty begins. After more than 25 years in media production alongside a career spent responding to disasters and complex emergencies, Christen turned the collision of those worlds into his first film - Into Uncertainty, a nonfiction adventure feature that asks a deceptively simple question: Why do people knowingly choose risk—and what can uncertainty reveal that comfort cannot?

For Into Uncertainty, Christen did not stand outside the story—he entered it. Alongside associate producer Derek Bays, he became both filmmaker and subject during the 2025 Baja XL, a 10-day, community-led off-road expedition through the Baja Peninsula. Working without a traditional outside production crew, the two filmmakers simultaneously navigated the expedition and documented it from within, building custom camera systems and capturing the story as mechanical failures, exhaustion, uncertainty, humor, and unexpected human connections unfolded around them.

Just weeks before departure, disaster deployments supporting the January 2025 Los Angeles wildfires disrupted their preparation and left the team entering Baja with an unfinished truck, improvised systems, and far less control than two emergency management professionals were accustomed to. That contradiction became central to the film: two people who spend their professional lives preparing for uncertainty choosing to enter it voluntarily.

Christen’s filmmaking approach favors immersion over spectacle and human contradiction over heroics. Rather than treating adventure as an end in itself, his work uses physical journeys to examine larger questions of fear, purpose, interdependence, identity, and the cost of waiting for certainty before fully living. Into Uncertainty reflects a perspective shaped by a career spent understanding risk professionally—and a personal instinct to discover what happens when the camera travels inside it.

I have spent much of my career preparing for uncertainty. Into Uncertainty gave me the rare opportunity to step deliberately into it—and to bring together two passions that had always seemed separate: visual storytelling and the study of how people respond when control begins to disappear. I feel extraordinarily fortunate to have made a film that combines the worlds I love, using a real expedition as the canvas for a larger story about risk, resilience, connection, and the choice to keep moving forward when the outcome is unknown.
