Intersections- Pilot Episode for Season 1- "Meet the Đà Nẵng Gang"
Intersections is an award winning documentary style series that explores the lives of the "Children of the Dust"; a Vietnamese term to refer to the mixed-race children born in Vietnam during the war. In many cases, they were orphaned and adopted into families around the world and now their journeys are intersecting with the unexpected gift of touching lives across multiple generations as a they turn the tide on the stigmas attached to the Vietnam War. The series also shares the stories of the men, women, and military service members that helped shape their lives. These are their stories... in their own words.
In this pilot episode of Season 1 of INTERSECTIONS, "Meet the Đà Nẵng Gang", we meet Cảnh, Rachel, Dan and Kirk; 4 Vietnam War era adoptees that resided in the Sacred Heart Orphanage in Đà Nẵng, Vietnam during the tail end of the war. They were adopted separately into families in the United States, lived very separate lives yet miraculously, their journeys intersected after nearly 50 years and they are finding purpose, passion, and connections that have changed the trajectory of each of their lives.

In the summer of 1969, during the peak of the Vietnam War, Kirk was born in Đà Nẵng, Việt Nam as Trần Văn Hùng of a Vietnamese mother and an American Serviceman. Immediately after being born, Kirk was forcibly taken from his mother and dropped off at the Sacred Heart Orphanage in Đà Nẵng by his uncle on the orders of his Vietnamese Grandfather, who felt shame from his teenage daughter’s out-of-wedlock pregnancy by an American.
When he was taken to the orphanage, his name was changed to Nguyễn Việt Hùng so that his mother wouldn’t be able to find him. In 1971, he was adopted by a US Army Major that was serving in the Vietnam War and became a naturalized US citizen in 1972 and given the adoptive name of Kirk Paul Kellerhals.
In 2017, on a whim, Kirk submitted to a DNA test simply to determine his full ethnicity and maybe connect with a distant biological relative. The results led him to discover that his birth mother and birth father were indeed alive and well and that he had brothers and sisters that he didn’t know existed. He also discovered that his birth mother had been searching for him for over 40 years. In 2023, Kirk legally changed his name to Trần Văn Kirk to reclaim his Vietnamese roots and identity, and to honor the life and name lovingly given to him by his adoptive parents.
Kirk is the Director and Executive Producer for "Intersections"
After countless movies, documentaries, and news stories across multiple generations, the biggest gap I have discovered in the Vietnam War narrative is the story of children like me that were fathered out of wedlock by foreign service members and civilian workers that were involved in this war. This film project fills that gap because these stories are now finally being shared for the first time by us, in our own words. Each episode for the “Intersections” documentary film series will not only highlight a life story but will also address the myriad of challenges that are an everyday part of life for anyone whose lives originated or intersected with the Vietnam War. To achieve maximum impact, I visualize a project that utilizes a perfect union of archived and modern visual media pertaining to the subject matter at hand.
Cinéma verité and documentary-style filming will be utilized for this project. Visually stunning cinematography will capture the contrast between the consequences of war and the achievement of accomplishment and peace through means of lighting and compositing. Incredible aerial cinematography will be used to capture the majestic landscapes of not only modern-day Vietnam but also of cities here in America for maximum visual impact.
For scoring of the soundtrack, I will achieve the maximum emotional impact possible with the utilization of edgy modern tracks from the music genres described best as inspirational “post-rock”, “indie rock”, and “epic rock” along with the styles of such music artists as Explosions in the Sky, Atticus Ross, Steve Jablonsky, and Hans Zimmer.
Unlike other limited documentary films and shorter news style type stories that have been done previously on this subject matter, as the Director, I am ensuring that each subject matter being featured reviews and approves any content of the project that focuses on their own personal narrative before being released publicly to ensure that the stories being portrayed are in their own words and are being shared in a manner that is true to their perspective. This will ensure the accuracy, integrity, and overall messaging being delivered through this project. All stated facts, circumstances, and measurable analytics will be vetted by the Director (me), the producers, and scriptwriters to the very best of our ability through research, cross-referencing, and networking with subject-matter experts.
I am a working Director and contribute to this project as not only the Director, but also as a Cinematographer, Chief Editor, Executive Producer, Writer, Aerial Cinematographer, cast member, and Co-Writer of the series theme song, "Something to Hold Onto" which was co-written and performed by Nashville Singer/Song Writer, Laurel Taylor for this film.
Fellow Vietnamese Amerasian adoptee, Cảnh Oxelson narrates and hosts this series.
