Private Project

In'sive

In’sive is short for inclusive. The film is an intimate portrait of Bristol’s unique underground music scene, focusing on the blend of improvisation, post-rock, free jazz, experimental, folk-drone, and no-wave that emerges from the inclusive values shared across these communities. It captures the thoughts and a small fragment of the lives of artists and performers connected to these scenes.

The film’s structure and selection of moments were guided by the music recorded and improvised during the filming day. Visually, it carries an intimate and contemplative tone, aiming to reflect the improvisational and spontaneous nature of this musical and social movement. It combines portraits, close-ups, details of the city, and phone recordings from various gigs.

The film features a select group of musicians, artists, and performers connected to Bristol, including members of Ex Agent, Improv’s Greatest Hits, Broadsheets, Distraxi, Foot Foot, Dan Johnson, Evo Ethel, and others. More than a documentary, it is a visual exploration of thoughts and personalities, offering a personal glimpse into their lives and the collective energy driving this movement. Its aim is to capture a social and highly creative phenomenon unique to this moment in time and place.

Director Biography - Pablo Jimenez-Moreno

Pablo Jimenez-Moreno was born in Mexico and trained as an architect, ultimately completing a PhD in Sustainable Architecture in the UK. He has long been intrigued by the ways in which architecture intersects with other artistic disciplines.
Over time, his curiosity led him beyond architecture, into other arts — particularly free-improvised music. He explores music as a form of expression, a tool for understanding the world, and a method for investigating creative processes themselves. He performs with ensembles such as Rah! and Imperceptible Clouds, develops solo guitar explorations, and collaborates with collectives including Community Jam and Improv’s Greatest Hits.
In’sive, his first film, brings together these interests. It is an intimate, living portrait of Bristol’s underground music scene, reflecting his ongoing fascination with improvisation, artistic community, and creativity as a way of living.

Director Statement

For me, filmmaking is about connection with the space around me, and with the moments that shape my experience of the world. My films are tools, or even excuses, for creation; like music, they have a determined timeframe and sequence, but within that framework I explore improvisation, intuition, and spontaneity.
Architecture teaches structure, proportion, and spatial relationships, but also how constraints can become opportunities. I bring these ideas into the film: the rhythm of the city, the flow of performances, the improvisational gestures of musicians.
I aim for the audience to feel the same intimacy and immediacy I feel when immersed in a musical performance or exploring the textures of space.
