Director Statement

Without a doubt, one of the blessings of my life is living in an era in which cinema exists. For me, cinema is more than entertainment or pleasure; watching a good film is a profound joy, and making a good film is a miracle of joy and meaning.

From my point of view, a good film is more than technique and ideas. An artist truly creates when a film is made not for festivals or for mere entertainment, but for thought—leading the audience into the filmmaker’s inner world and stirring an inquiry that brings the viewer closer to human fulfillment.

A filmmaker must first carry deeply lived experience; when the smile of understanding appears upon their lips, then the time for creation has arrived. Cinema is the language of feeling, and a filmmaker without feeling can never be a good filmmaker.

A filmmaker is not obliged to know more than society, but must understand and perceive more than society. Cinema is a remedy for the human being; yet the filmmaker must first have been afflicted, to be able to become a healer. The modes of remedy in the art of cinema are as varied as the differences between Freud and Heidegger; and in my view, Freud’s readings often go astray.

I believe in a cinema rooted not in airs and superficial gestures, but in the essence of meaning and truth—a cinema that, instead of parading appearances, reaches for the core of the human being and the world. I hope we may be filmmakers who, with truth and feeling, brighten the world and restore cinema to its authentic place.

With affection for all the artists of the world, Mahdi Katirachi
