Director Biography - Gabriel Otero

Visionary Multimedia Artist and Non-Conformist Filmmaker
Born on May 25, 1969, in Bahia Blanca, Argentina, he is a multimedia director renowned for his pioneering work in digital art and cinema. His journey in the world of creativity began when he founded Rattlesnake Multimedia Design, an independent production company in Argentina, marking the start of the country's first international digital art festival, Rosario Arte Digital Muestra 0, in 2003. This groundbreaking event, held at the Centro de Expresiones Contemporáneas (CEC), hosted 600 international artists and set the stage for a series of multimedia festivals to follow.

Beyond his contributions to digital art, Otero is also an accomplished saxophonist, having co-founded the experimental music trio Estado Filarmonico at the age of 24. Alongside Adrian Maglia on piano and Juan Martin Medrano on guitar, they released the album "Alea Jacta Est" in 1995, showcasing their avant-garde approach to music.

Otero's creative efforts extend into various domains, including creation, direction, and production. He organized multidisciplinary events such as Temporary Lab, dedicated to visual arts, music, and gastronomy, as well as Cine Live, a platform celebrating cinematic movements. His innovative concept of cinevjing, combining live video and sound mixing, was introduced through Cine Shot, captivating audiences with immersive experiences.

Founder of Club VJ, an international virtual space fostering artistic exchange, Otero continues to push the boundaries of creativity. He curated the International Festival Parachute Light Zero, a vibrant showcase including short films, photography, performances, installations, fashion shows, experimental music, and much more.

Otero's influence extends beyond Argentina as he was the editor in charge of the Le Club VJ section for Headliners Mag, an online magazine specializing in electronic music. His expertise has also been recognized internationally, with invitations to serve as an official jury member at prestigious events like BYOB Prague 2016 (Signal Festival).

Throughout his career, Otero has immersed himself in audiovisual installations, creating captivating experiences in various settings. From clubs in Argentina to prestigious venues in Paris, his installations have mesmerized audiences, using elements such as giant screens, video mapping, and live sound to redefine spatial storytelling.

In addition to his installations, Otero has made significant contributions to the world of short films, receiving honors and recognition for his avant-garde works. His creative vision has been celebrated with awards and selections at renowned festivals, solidifying his status as a pioneer in the field of experimental cinema. Otero's journey continues with a series of feature films and an ongoing exploration of multimedia art, promising audiences an immersive and thought-provoking experience. With each project, he reaffirms his commitment to pushing artistic boundaries and challenging perceptions in the digital age.

Director Statement

"In 2002, while I was studying film and television in Rosario, Argentina, I was contacted by the secretary of the director of EPCTV. She asked me to accompany the director to the Federal Women's Penitentiary Complex IV as part of research for a film. It was there that I first heard the heartbreaking story of a woman who was a victim of domestic violence. This woman was serving a sentence for murder because she had reached her breaking point. For four long hours, she patiently waited for her husband to return home from work before killing him with an axe, no longer able to endure the unbearable situation.

This experience profoundly shaped my perspective as a filmmaker and drove me to learn more about the tragic phenomenon of violence against women. I then embarked on producing a documentary series that would address this sensitive and important subject. My goal was to raise awareness about this issue's magnitude and foster a constructive dialogue around it.

Each testimony reinforced my determination to give a voice to these women broken by a patriarchal society. I also became aware of the importance of the psychological and legal support these women need to rebuild themselves after experiencing unimaginable violence.

I hope that this documentary series can continue to change mentalities and contribute to eradicating violence against women. My objective is to inform and educate the public about the different forms of violence against women while providing a space for survivors to express themselves. I firmly believe that the power of cinema can help change attitudes and further the fight against this insidious violence.

By telling these stories, I also want to encourage women to speak about their experiences and seek help. I want to show them that they are not alone and that resources are available to support them on their path to healing. As a filmmaker, I am committed to giving a voice to the victims and contributing to positive change in our society.

Through my documentaries, I invite viewers to recognize the importance of supporting and helping women who are victims of violence. Together, we can break this destructive cycle and build a safer future for everyone."
