What would you do if you found out that your child's school garden was contaminated with carcinogens? If the field where you raised your animals was soaked in poisons? What if your land is littered with toxic and hazardous waste dumps? There are those who have not stood by and watched, as in Brescia, one of the richest cities in Italy, where the wealth brought by large industries has had and continues to have a very high price: pollution. Rosy Battaglia's documentary-investigation tells the story, from 2013 to 2019, of those who have not turned a blind eye in the name of a better future for the new generations.
Brescia has become the capital of the "Land of Fires of the North". Home to the Caffaro Site of National Interest, placed under judicial seizure in February 2021, still a polluting source of PCBs, dioxins and heavy metals, which former Italian Environment Minister Sergio Costa called "a wound at the heart of the country". The city was also at the centre of the first wave of the Covid-19 pandemic. A few months later, it is important to reflect, against the backdrop of the events in Brescia, the reconstruction and testimonies of those who, at a national level, including associations, administrators and doctors, have mobilised to urge central and regional institutions to carry out clean-up processes throughout Italy.
"Io non faccio finta di niente" is a story focused on the resilience and active participation of citizens who care about the protection of health and the environment in Italy. It is the second of the "Resilient Stories", after "La rivincita di Casale Monferrato", produced from below by "Cittadini Reattivi" from all over Italy, through crowdfunding, which reconstructs the civic and civil struggles that have crossed the boot in the last decade.
