Director Biography - Ras Crews

Ice Prince was originally a novel that evolved into what it is today. The main character was created when I was going through a prison sentence and had a major shift in my thinking.

I started self reflecting about some of the events that took place in my life which led me to be where I was. I thought about the people that I crossed paths with, the music that I listened to, the block that I grew up on, my friends, my family, everything. This period of introspection inspired me to use my time wisely and instead of passing time being negative I began to write.

I created the first pages of what is now called Ice Prince. The original script was influenced by movies such as “Eight Mile” and “Hustle and Flow”. I remember watching these movies on the big screen and actually relating to the struggles of the main characters represented in each film.

I was in awe of how raw each movie was. I could feel the emotion of each character in the movie but what grabbed my attention even more was the music and the representation of hip-hop music and culture.

The second I got the chance to pursue my passion I did and this is the begining of it here.

This film is about holding on. A genre that is overlooked is the storytelling of honest human sacrifice and blunders as well as joy and improvement. This short aims to change that. Filmed in New York’s Brooklyn, Bronx, Queens and Manhattan boroughs it paints a realistic picture of life.

Director Statement

This is my first endeavour is adapted from my novel the ICE PRINCE.

Although, the movie settings took place in states far away for New York City I could relate completely with the struggle of trying to make it out of the neighborhood and the fight to avoid prison by any means necessary which in most cases is almost impossible to do.

While writing my script I wanted my characters to be just as relatable and I also envisioned a film with original music recorded by the top hip-hop artists. I visualized a film that told my story and the story of every young man trying to beat the odds and become something spectacular. When I started writing again I knew that this was all that I wanted to do with my life. I wanted to bring Ice Prince to life for others to experience his life, his struggles, his passions, his pain, his success, and his failure.

Through Ice Prince's production, I hope to inspire the youth of today and futures of tomorrow to never give up on their dreams. I was a troubled youth being rebellious until I was approached by Mr. Cohen the english teacher from the alternative school I was enrolled in.

He told me I couldn't just sleep in his class and that I had to do something or he was going to kick me out. I told him english wasn't for me. He challenged me to write a poem which I thought was stupid. But I did and gave it to him quite angrily. Two weeks later he approached me with a newspaper and told me to open it. I did and their was my poem second place winner. That was the day I discovered I had talent to express myself, and I hope to inspire that teenager or young adult that has doubts about their abilities in life to find the winner in themselves.
