Skyler Muller is a young filmmaker from Almelo, The Netherlands. They began their journey in the film industry as a stills photographer on several projects. From a young age, Skyler's dad taught them about photography, and by the age of fourteen, Skyler was learning everything they could about filmmaking.
Their love for fantasy and sci-fi movies fueled their drive to learn CGI and filmmaking in general.
Besides their own projects, Skyler works as crew on a variety of projects. Recently, Skyler was DoP for a test shoot for a fourth instalment in the ‘De Schippers van de Kameleon’ series, and for the movie ‘Beauty of Life’ by Nicolas Nunez.
Since first having heard of the myth of Icarus back in highschool, Skyler loved the depth the story offers. While often told as a warning ‘don’t fly too high’, it can also be seen as a story about freedom. Going after what you want, no matter the consequences. Reading the many different interpretations of the message the story is supposed to tell, they chose to focus this movie on hope, rather than a warning. Why shouldn’t you go after what you want, and live a fulfilling life? ‘Before he fell, Icarus flew.’
Skyler did months of research into not just the story of Icarus, but into Minoan culture and architecture as well. All throughout the movie, there are references to paintings which were discovered in the palace of Knossos in Crete. The typical architecture of the palace is visible throughout the movie. Even the colours found in the costumes are based on ancient Greek culture, traditions and beliefs. Such as the specific color purple that King Minos wears, which was a very expensive color reserved for royalty, and could only be made from shells which were found on the beaches of Crete.
‘Icarus’ is a solo-production by Skyler Muller. Filmed entirely in a garage box, a small filmset was build for the main location of the film. The other locations are CGI. No generative AI was used in the creation of the short film ‘Icarus’.
