I love stories that literally rip the rug from underneath you. Films like Memento, Inception (Dir. Christopher Nolan) and Shutter Island (Dir. Martin Scorsese) are really the inspiration for how I came to write I am Sherlock Holmes. I wanted to tell a familiar story and turn it on its head.
At the early stages of writing I partnered with a charity called V Inspired, who were looking to help raise awareness for mental health in the LGBTQ community. I approached them with an idea to tell a story about a gay man with schizophrenia who believed he was Sherlock Holmes and after a few phone calls they couldn’t wait to greenlight the project.
The story at heart is a ‘day in the life’ of living with schizophrenia. Shaun, has an episode in which he believes he is somewhere and someone he is not. His fiancé, John, then has to help him through the episode and utilize the support available to him. While the story has elements of a psychological thriller, I wanted to make sure the story was as close and grounded to reality as possible.
