Director Statement

The initial inspiration for I Will Make It Worth Your While (2023) was derived from my experience of working in hospitality for several years. From these various roles, I have dealt with several managers who would often steal tips from employees and speak unprofessionally to myself and other employees. From this experience, I began to develop the character of Declan, the con man restaurant owner, who is desperate to save his business after years of sleaze.

The idea of having Declan as the protagonist intrigued me, as stories that follow the villain as the protagonist have always interested me. I also wanted to focus on making a film about a flawed character who was navigating a stressful situation, creating some level of sympathy for the film’s protagonist, despite everything that he has done previously. I was especially interested in juxtaposing the scene of Declan distraught at being conned with the success of the people who conned him. I thought this would be especially effective in opening a deeper dialogue between the audience and the characters over which characters are actually in the right, if any.

Through working on this project I have learnt so much about the complexities of filmmaking and this film has allowed me to develop as a writer and director. I am especially grateful to the incredible cast and crew who have helped to bring to life this piece!
