I Saw the Sunbeams
'A young man reminisces on his past, returning to the village where he once grew up in. Reliving long forgotten memories, both good and bad, while his past stalks him.'
'I Saw the Sunbeams' is a short animated film inspired by my own village, where a lot is changing as it is currently being developed. This film is ultimately a love letter to the place I grew up.
The story, however, focuses on a transgender man, Armitage Hayes, who now lives in the big city but misses a childhood that he wishes to forget. Thus, he embarks on a journey home to walk the fields he spent so much time in, in part to remember but also as a last farewell. He uncovers memories of spending days with his old childhood friend while also revisiting places that hold painful moments from his youth. Ultimately, going on a story of self-discovery and acceptance.

Leon Kirk is a Norwich Uni of the Arts graduate, where he made his graduate film ‘I Saw the Sunbeams’. He grew up in rural bedfordshire before moving to East Anglia– Norfolk for his university education.
Director and Background Designer, Leon Kirk focuses on creating queer stories especially those highlighting transgender characters. Diligently, to put more people like himself into the centre of the story.
This film was the ultimate test for my abilities as a student, and it is also how I uncovered my love of filming on vintage cameras. As the story grew so did my interest in a mix media film, and thus the perhaps unique style of this story was born. I am very proud to have made this film and hope it's the start to many more in the future.
