Director Statement

IN THE SEA was produced to discuss open water swimming, a practice portrayed in Rio de Janeiro showing the nature of the city; and also to discuss the implied ableism in the concept of "overcoming" for people with disabilities - a condition of one of the directors, who is also the main subject of the film, as well as the Brazilian racial inequality, and the importance of autonomy in the usage of bodies. The film is connected to a recent episode: the inauguration of President Lula next to a person with a disability.
