Director Biography - RAHEL T YOHANNES

I’m a british Eritrean who has been living in London since I was a child, I'm a writer/director, actress and producer
In 2014 I joined the independent film organisation Raindance which heavily promotes the 'you can do ityourself' and create your work whether it be writing or producing or directing or any of the myriad of film departments.

I love the fact of discovering talent in the cast and crew and then fitting the pieces of the puzzle together, within a month of Raindance I had written, produced and acted in my first short, a romantic comedy film titled' Sarah's(Hopefully) Wonderful Wedding'(SHWW).
It is semi-autobiographical so I believe that is why it flowed out quite easily and speedily and is a passion project that is close to my heart. The producer on my short film was also working on a feature film and dropped out at the last minute, it was a baptism of fire. I became a producer by default and loved creating it. I also sketch so I storyboarded the scenes which spurred me on to direct a project.

The first short I wrote and produced was ‘Sarah’s (Hopefully Wonderful Wedding-SHWW), a comedic clash of two cultures, black and indian in the lead up to a mixed race marriage.

I attend the cannes festival every year, the aim is to foster relationships with sales agents, distributors, producers and financiers. In 2015, I founded the Fulllife 7 Films production company

The second short that I directed ,wrote and produced (2016) is called ‘Rendezvous B4 the Wedding’

It was another scene from the feature with an updated new surreal supernatural element to it. It was really fun and educational to be able to focus and be specific with a scene.

I’m currently developing SHSWW into a feature, I have so far shown slices of life, a couple of scenes from it in most of the shorts I’ve produced and directed.

The next short was ‘Sarah’s Restaurant Rendezvous (2017) wasd a dark comedy and sees Sarah mysteriously meet both her ex and her fiancé at the same café. It reached 10 international film festivals.

The following short ‘Feel the Rhythm’(2018) reached 30 international film festivals and garnered 3 awards.

It was followed by ‘Trust Me Babydoll’(2019) , a modern film noir which is the first drama script I’ve written to date.

In 2020 I directed the surreal short ‘In the Mood for SHSWW’ which is a proof of concept for the feature ‘Sarah’s (Hopefully) Sunny & Wonderful Wedding’.

In 2021 I've been filming ‘Searching for Dottore’ which is shooting in london and rome, this will also be developed into a feature.

In the Mood for SHSWW is a proof of concept to the feature ‘Sarah’s (Hopefully) Sunny & Wonderful Wedding. It is giving a sneak peek or mood into this world hence the name. It follows the timeline of a mixed race relationship from the meet cute to marriage. It has the surrealness of the ‘Amelie’ and the voyeurism of Wong Kar-wai’s ‘In the Mood for Love’. I’m also a fan of french new wave films including the style of breaking the 4th wall.

It was shot on an Arri , I wanted to step up in production, I’ve always wanted to use anamorphic lenses to get that distinctive cinematic look so I went all out on this short.

There is a ‘game’ reference to the cinema scene which is a theme that exists in the feature, the feeling of being controlled and watched by someone or something which remains unknown. The game of life, as Shakespeare stated ‘all the worlds a stage, all the men and women merely players.’

The colour palette is that of a yellow hue with reds and blues. At the beginning of their relationship bright happy colours conveying light and freedom interspersed, later through the years reflecting the unease that can develop in a long term relationship there is more desaturation.
In terms of sound, atmospheric sounds like the soft wispy wind of the dream sequences a, a heart beating softly, my sound designer skillfully melds diegetic and non-diegetic sounds.
An eclectic soundtrack including a hindi track, spanish guitar tracks, a 50’s themed track , a light french track bring life to the scenes.
The ultimate message is that of embracing diversity and that love must be encouraged at every opportunity.
