Born and raised in Mérida, Yucatán, México, Rafael showed from an early age his desire to be a storyteller, scribbling on pieces of paper short stories that he would share with friends and family. At age ten, he knew his place to tell these stories was at the movies. He went on to study communication, specializing in film, at Anáhuac Mayab University. While attending university, he took his first dive into screenwriting in 2015 by enrolling on a summer course at the University of New Mexico, where he wrote and directed his very first short film. After that he went on to participate in multiple projects both inside and outside his studies, raging from short films, to music videos, vlogs, and ads, in which he gained experience in multiple areas of filmmaking, from writing, directing, editing, producing, boom operating, assistant director, production assistant, and others. During his last year of his studies, in 2018, he enrolled in an intensive course at Vancouver Film School where he would eventually attend the writing program.
After graduating he worked as a freelance editor and moved in between jobs unrelated to filmmaking. From 2020 to 2021 he was hired as editor and video producer at Taktic, a real estate company, where he further developed his skills as an editor. In 2022 he went back to Vancouver Film School and studied the one year writing program, and taking the video game stream. After graduating, he wrote, directed, and edited “IMPOSTER,” a neo-noir horror short film, currently in its festival run.
There is something particularly devastating in the tearing of the bond between children and their parents. I believe we all go through a phase in our lives when the people who raised us can’t look at us the same way they used to. Sometimes this tear is small, and sometimes it’s a complete separation. But it is there nonetheless. I’m not a parent myself, but I’ve looked through the eyes of my own and seen that dissonance. The thing is, I realized who I truly am and what I believe in long before they did, and in that process they felt that there was something uncanny in the sound of my voice, and for a time the son they thought they knew, wasn’t there anymore. Let this not be a misunderstanding: I love my parents dearly, and I know they love me. I owe them my life. But the inevitable reality is that we see and paint the world in different colors. When writing this script, I wanted to tell a story that shows that tear through the lens of the macabre. I wanted it to be unnerving and disturbing, because that’s what that tearing does. It disturbs the shared spaces, the conversations, the relationships. So I thought it best to take it to the extreme and make it a horror, while also paying homage to some of my favorite shows and films that serve me as inspiration. From the early episodes of the Twilight Zone, to the modern trend of the genre that explores the dark side of family dynamics. And also because horror is very cool.
This film could not have been possible without the amazing talent of the cast and crew behind it, so I’d like to close this statement acknowledging their effort and thanking them for believing in this script and giving their full commitment on set and beyond. It’s because of them that I was able to tell this story in the exact way that I wanted to tell it.
