Director Statement

On April 16, 2020, I lost my baby at four months of pregnancy. My baby was born with no heartbeat in the middle of our street. I was rushed to the hospital, where I almost lost my life. I had to be given a blood transfusion and endured two days of hospitalization alone, surrounded by Covid patients. The ordeal was traumatic, and I needed time to heal. As a result of the trauma, postpartum symptoms, loss of my little girl Nora, and the state of the world, I woke up feeling like I was a different person each and every day. That feeling inspired me to research Dissociative Identity Disorder, formerly called Multiple Personality Disorder, and in doing so, I grew extremely empathetic to individuals who have it and it inspired me to write a film where the lead character has DID. I presented this to my amazing filmmaking partner (and fellow actor in the film), and together we co-wrote and produced our psychological drama feature I'M OKAY, WE'RE OKAY. Writing this film helped me move forward, and begin my own healing process from what I had lost. I wanted to write a story where the lead character was going forward in their own healing. We shot it during the height of the pandemic with a passionate cast and crew that truly believed in the work we were doing.

I co-wrote, acted, and directed this film, and although there were many challenges, I feel I could not have pulled it off if it wasn't for my extremely passionate and talented crew. As a director, I had a very specific vision for the tone, speed, and cinematography, but as an actor, I leaned on my crew to give me the notes that would make my performance strong enough to carry a film. I knew I had to have not one bit of ego, and took notes from absolutely every crew member that may have had one. I do believe this collaboration made the film stronger, and I trust my crew with extreme love.

I had several goals in mind when creating I'M OKAY, WE'RE OKAY -- one being that the film has a plus-size lead, highlighting body positivity, while the plot doesn't have anything to do with her size. How our lead is Latinx, but the story doesn't revolve around that, and how a plus-size woman could have an intimate sexual relationship with a man that Hollywood would never pair her up with. I wanted to use myself as a vessel to represent the underrepresented. Our film talks about mental health and trauma in a unique but compelling way, and what this film showcases, I have yet to see elsewhere. I want to change the narrative and prove that stories and characters like these are wanted and needed in today's TV and film.
