Joe Jatcko is a native Coloradian always on the hunt for stories that challenge the structures around us. He has produced feature films, documentaries, and traveled to the developing world to highlight the work of local and global organizations. An award-winning writer and director, his plays have been produced coast to coast and his short films have screened at festivals in the US and abroad.
As a lifelong insomniac, I've always been interested in exploring the kind of second life I had where most everyone I knew was asleep. Love, like sleep, had become equally mysterious and it occured to me that the two forces had a lot in common--at least for me. Neither could be forced, and still, either could occur without warning and knock you out just as hard.
When I read about a woman in China who supposedly hadn't slept since childhood, the whole thing immediately cauterized in my brain. What if there was a disorder where the person's ability to sleep was directly tied to the person they were sleeping next to? And how would it make them come off if they were trying to date but mostly just to get a good night's sleep?
