Director Biography - Isaac Knopf

It was in suburban Kansas City where my eyes first lit up making films. I was a kid with a small camera in a big, new world. As I moved into my twenties, my curiosity about the world grew with me. In expanding my horizons, I’ve encountered love, loss, fear, grief, humor, and all of the undefined spaces in between. It’s my personal journey growing into this existence that has compelled me to create — fueled at once by the wonder of childhood and the immenseness of growing older.

In 2018, I was a senior at film school in St. Louis. Bonny was also a senior, but of the older variety. She’d lived in Nashville most of her life. After a storied career as a caterer and car saleswoman — to name just a couple of stops along the way — she moved to Atlanta, where the film industry was taking off. She wanted in — so she made acting her next chapter.

My co-producer, Angela, sent out a nationwide casting call for the title role in my thesis film, “Driving Louise.” It’s a road trip film about the multitudes of identity and breaking through the boxes in which we’re placed.

In her casting submission, Bonny proclaimed, “I am Louise.” That was the moment our roads crossed.

It’s been years since I first worked with Bonny. As she puts it, “We became close friends and I thought her life was interesting” — so I decided to make a documentary.

“I Am Louise” culminates in the moment Bonny’s path meets mine. But the heart of the film lies in her defiance: of boundaries, of expectations, and of what it means to grow older.
