Jack Hawkins is an actor, writer and director from London. In film and television he has appeared in Call The Midwife, Harlots and The Head Hunter; in theatre he’s worked numerous times in London’s West End and toured internationally with Cheek By Jowl, performing at the Sydney Theatre Company and at BAM in New York. He completed a law degree at Oxford University, before attending the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art. This is his first short film.
I wanted to make Hunting to explore danger, threat, and pain. An everyday interaction with a hidden danger, and a troubled man broken by the pain of his memories. In terms of our setting, it's common for people living in rented accommodation to have rental agents visit their home with prospective clients, and therefore for them to have strangers exploring their private space, seeing their personal things, and being given an opportunity to take advantage of them. Hunting entangles this jeopardy with the story of a grieving father. In this emotionally charged scenario, we not only deal with themes of loss and bereavement, but also of deception and betrayal: as our protagonist has to conceal his true feelings and motives in order to achieve his goal. I wanted to work in a single location, concentrating our audience on a small snapshot in the story of the lives of our two characters. So much has gone before, and we are left with a dark, foreboding fear of what disaster is to come, but Hunting lets us inside these two lives for the briefest of moments, as they converge for a few life-changing minutes.
