How We Met

Brian and Claire are setting up their wedding website. When they have to share how they met, they know the true story…isn’t the most happily ever after story.

Director Statement

It was quite ironic timing to direct How We Met for me. I had just had my wedding a couple weeks prior to filming. During the wedding planning process, I remember sitting down to write our "How We Met" story with my then fiance and thinking -- will anybody think this is cheesy? Will anybody believe this happened? and, ultimately, will anybody care?

In breaking down the script, it was clear to me that we needed to ground the vignette flashbacks in reality but with a hint of comedy. I took inspiration from the comedic over-the-top dating montage in Naked Gun and the awkwardness of (500) days of summer. That hot guy entrance, though, was a last minute "oh-my-god-this-would-be-hilarious" moment that came up during the scout. Since I now wanted it to bigger than life, we took inspiration from WWE Entrance walks, NY Fashion Runways, and character introduction sequence of Sierra Burges is a Loser.

The screenwriter Leigh Cesiro made it very clear to not make it seem as though any of the characters were at fault for being an unlikely couple. They have their flaws, which indicate why this couple shouldn't be considering marriage. But it's not to come across in a manner that's blame-worthy. That's why I found it important that their relationship look more like an oil and water feel. I chose to have the characters visually distance between them to indicate that they very much operate in their own worlds. When they collide, it's a conflict good people operating under very different fundamental levels.

I hope audiences have a few chuckles and enjoy the vignettes. Those were the MOST FUN to do because it was light, fluffy, and more delicious than a slice of wedding cake.
