How Do You Fall Out of Love with Country Music?
She just wants to sing country and western on stage, but it's not easy for a South Asian-American in the deep south where every audience is a hostile one. “How Do You Fall Out of Love with County Music” is a humorous and moving short film about cultural alienation and the possibilities for human connection through music. Set on stage in a honky-tonk bar, Amy Singh courageously bares her soul to the audience and reveals deep truths about racism and belonging in our country today.

I first came across the script for this monologue when I was invited to direct for a short play festival. I was immediately won over by its humor, depth, and the powerful emotional journey of a woman who is a cultural anomaly. Translating the piece from solo theater to film was a fantastic journey where I was able to experiment in a new way with metaphoric visuals, lighting and sound. I hope that film will also provide a broader platform so more people will experience this unique inroad into the national dialogue about diversity and equality.
