Director Statement

HOOKAH short movie is a tale about an Egyptian low class working woman, it is narrated in a symbolic context that expresses the condition of Egyptian women in a masculine society full of poverty and ignorance.
These women are the ones that suffer the most from spousal abuse and domestic violence specially if they are the ones who provide money and food to their homes and living with an unemployed husband.
In our culture Hookah is a popular item which is mainly associated with oriental men, it symbolizes the weak woman who is psychologically and financially drained by her partner same as the unemployed oriental man who drains his favorite Hookah to please himself as he wishes.
The film highlights the great psychological impact they suffer daily and its consequences on their lives and presents a new perspective on this issue in order to build an influential social awareness in our society.
