JOSE (JOE) BARAJAS is an actor, writer, director and producer, currently residing in Austin, Texas. Joe began his love in all things film when he managed to convince his high school English teacher to create a short film as part of his assignment rather than turn in a written essay. In the process, he single-handedly created a Video Editing department for his high school. In his college years he was a stage manager for an Anton Chekov play on “Off Off Broadway” in New York City. Later, Joe decided to move to Austin, Texas where he graduated from college and continued his film pursuit. He earned his way onto film sets (as a Production Assistant) for major motion pictures such as “Spy Kids 4”, “Meet Jane”, “Machete Kills”, and “When Angels Sing” to name a few. It was this experience that prepared him to create his own production company named Regardless Productions. He started with writing a short film titled “In Front Of You” and later co-wrote a webseries titled “Josep and Shawn.” Joe went on to produce and direct these films along with other films which eventually led to his first feature Directorial Debut titled “Hollow Scream.” Not only was Joe behind the camera, his main passion is being in front of the camera ever since appearing in films such as “Line of Duty” (Mission Park), and indie films such “Garusta” (Aghora), “Army Battlemind” (made for Army Training) and most recently “Hollow Scream”. Joe has also been cast in numerous local, regional and national commercials including Dell, Church’s Chicken, Frost Bank and most recently the Amazon NextGen Commercial.
In March 2015 my production company Regardless Productions was hired by a new Halloween park called Scream Hollow to create their first commercial. Touring the land and layout I immediately saw the cinematic potential. I discussed shooting a short film with Scream Hollow’s owner who quickly agreed. I immediately contacted my writer David L. Carter and said I needed a short script asap. After I sent him location photos and we discussed ideas, David soon came back with a great script. The problem was the world we created felt bigger than just a short. Having never shot a feature I was hesitant, but knew now was the time. I challenged David to continue writing. We shot the commercial and then turned our focus on the feature. July 2015 I began shooting David’s original script as he stepped up to the challenge virtually writing as we shot.
We endured challenges typical to any production, we had the roadblock of shooting our scenes -- all exterior and at night -- at Scream Hollow on weekends. As the park was designed for Halloween, we were limited to shooting around that season. In addition, we had to re-shoot several scenes based on schedule conflicts. Our biggest obstacle may have been matching scenes shot in humid central Texas August with those shot on the coldest January in years. Actors wearing only shorts and t-shirts performed in the woods in low-30 degree weather succeeded in making it look like the mid-70 degree weather they had performed in six months earlier. Our actors and actresses did great with these challenges that were thrown their way! Re-writes on the set became the norm as other challenges arose. We wrapped the following summer at a local high school with an incredibly talented and eager crew.
Post-production took longer than we anticipated but were able to overcome the infamous budget increases and roadblocks that came our way to make sure our product was quality worthy and something we could be proud to put out in the world.
As I reflect upon what became a 3 year journey, I recognize how much I have changed as a director and person. Since that initial meeting with the owner of Scream Hollow, my wife and I now have two beautiful sons, I created my own insurance business with my wife, and my production company has received several honors for short films we have produced.
And, of course, I have a feature Directorial Debut titled Hollow Scream.
