Director Statement

I wrote, Hit & Run, while I was still in film school because I wanted to write a story about a former softball player who unexpectedly quit before going to college. I grew up playing softball for 13 years and ultimately quit before going to college to focus on my education. While it is not my personal experience, manipulation and sexual assault are traumas that unfortunately affects a lot of people, including several people in my life so I wanted to illustrate Alex’s trauma in an honest way. When our lead actress, Che, finished auditioning, we all knew she was the one who could do it. While living in Seattle, Alex was able to escape, but coming back home brought back the memories she repressed. Sexual trauma, especially by a trusted figure, is not an easy thing to get over and victim can get triggered at any moment, and that was the main thing I wanted to show with Alex. She wants to forget, and it affects her relationships with those people closest to her. When we first made Hit & Run, we didn’t intend for it to be the first part of a series, but as I sat with it longer, there was so much more I wanted to say with these stories and these characters. Creating this film and this series helped me grow as a writer and director, and hearing how people connected with these characters has been really rewarding.
