Director Biography - George Stagakis

My name is George Stagakis, I was born in Athens in 2002 and grew up in Chalkida. In 2020 I started studying at SAE Athens and now I am in the last year of my studies.

During my studies I have directed some student short films and I have edited some other films of my fellow students.

For the last two years I have been working as an editor for a well-known radio producer and for the last few months I have also been editing a well-known Greek Youtuber. In addition I have directed a music video clip and co-directed a commercial for an NGO.

Director Statement

When I first received the script "On the Hill", I felt a huge emptiness inside me because I was very aware of the connections between the two worlds of the story. Moreover, I found creative the depiction of emotions particularly successful and the way in which it refers to the mechanism of the human brain suffering from dementia.

The psychological struggle after the breakup of a toxic relationship by the protagonist, to the loss of a loved one at the end, are things I have experienced and combined with the mysterious character that works inside the protagonist's brain, motivated me to visualize this particular story.

On the creative side, the world of the mysterious character has a minimalist style, with a particular symmetry and rigor in the frames. The combination of the intense color changes of the lighting and the rich color palette of each frame, help the viewer to penetrate the story but also leave the viewer with some questions. In the realistic world of Epaminondas, the direction focuses on the beautiful and warm human relationships between the characters, with frequent close-ups on the faces, giving emphasis to the actors' performances and it seeks to emphasize the warmth of human emotion.
