Writer Biography - Farook Qais

Farook Qais, born and raised in the UK with South Asian heritage, had a tumultuous upbringing marked by significant upheaval. Growing up he found peace in a diverse group of friends. Still connected to many, they now range from doctors to criminals. Despite the challenges, Farook's passion for storytelling emerged early, as he began creating characters at the age of 5.

After graduating from the University of Greenwich, London with a Bachelor's degree in Creative Industries, Farook channelled his creative energy into writing novels before delving into the world of screenwriting. His strength lies in his ability to breathe life into characters, weaving narratives with drama, evolving relationships, and emotive storytelling. His writing reflects a deep-seated desire to succeed and a commitment to bringing to the screen a genuine reflection of his life and diverse experiences. Farook aspires to share narratives that resonate with authenticity and capture the richness of his own journey.

Writer Statement

I am a British-born Muslim of South Asian heritage. Having been single-parented and passed around as a child, I channel my experiences with a common theme of Explosive Emotive Drama. I write film and TV, with each carrying a clear message and multiple life lessons. I won the feature category of Roadmap’s Writers' flagship “JumpStart” competition. I am a Semifinalist in ScreenCraft’s Virtual Pitch and Quarterfinalist in Big Break.

Writing to illuminate oneself is one of the hardest things a wannabe writer can be asked to do. I know my brand, I know my strengths, I know what I can bring to the table and I am confident that for every obstacle standing in my way; I can find a creative solution.
I have spent my life putting my writing first. At five years old I realised stories were told based on one’s imagination and from then on I started to create characters. I A*’d English at GCSE, I A*’d Media Studies at 6th form and I achieved a Creative Industries Bachelors degree from the University of Greenwich. I then worked various jobs to make ends meet while still prioritising my writing. I wrote two adult novels and three children’s novels over ten years. Suffice to say; I wasn’t able to save for a house. As I have gotten older my writing went from novels to screenwriting because I enjoy it more. My brand is emotive drama. My strength is longevity in storytelling and character development. What I bring to the table is fearless exploration of my upbringing and my experiences.
I was passed around five different households as a child. My mother, single and hard-working, has never taken a penny off the benefit system here in the UK. She worked while I moved – I moved because she was trying to keep me safe, as my father was ready to snatch and traffic me at any moment. I grew up surrounded by temptations and dark roads, but I’ve managed to keep my dream alive. May this story and others propel my dreams forward as well as the most important thing to me; great stories.
