Director Biography - Nikolina Riselius

Nikolina Riselius is a 21-year-old filmmaker from Umeå, Sweden, who focuses on short, narrative works and has produced, written, directed and edited several projects. She previously studied both theatre and filmmaking and is now pursuing directing and writing at Prague Film School, in the Czech Republic.

In 2023 she started up a film firm, Riselius Film, to deepen her journey in film and production. Under the company, she’s completed three financed short films, which has thus far accumulated 17 awards and festival selections. Her second short, “Här är inget”, won at Novemberfestivalen(2024), the nationals in Swedish youth film, where it also garnered recognition from the Swedish Film Institute.

All her works have had a foot in some supernatural or unnatural aspects, which is where her passion within film and storytelling lies and is eager to explore the strangeness deeper in future projects. She's drawn to narratives that step outside the real world as, for her, it sparks deeper engagement and opens up new possibilities for exploring themes and stories when it’s unbound.

Director Statement

I wanted to make this film because it spoke to me, storywise, thematically and also because the way, the structure and the setting of the film interested me. The choice of having it take place in a dream setting allowed it to go places it otherwise couldn’t. I’ve drawn inspiration from a multitude of mediums, films, papers, blogs, music, etc discussing the themes of this film and then brought a piece of myself into it. The story comes from a place of uncertainty and fear. One that derives from a personal view and a wavering hope in that what we do and who we are matters and, despite it all, can forge a light in an endlessly dark tunnel.

The process of bringing the story to life had many challenges, as I had never done anything like it on this scale, and with backing and financing from Film i Västerbotten, the film was set on its way. This film was a collective effort and having this truly hard-working and engaged cast and crew is what made it possible. Throughout this process, I’ve learned so much about both filmmaking as well as myself, and despite the difficulties, I wouldn’t trade it for anything.
