Herbert West: Reanimator

Vincent Price stars in this newly discovered Promotional Reel for “Herbert West: Reanimator” produced for Exhibitors ahead of the planned 1964 release. The first screen adaptation from weird fiction author H.P. Lovecraft, the feature film was shelved after a single screening at the Tunguska Broken Trees Memorial Film Festival and is thought to be lost. Considered broad enough by today's standards to be considered parody, the filmmakers were clearly influenced by the films of William Castle. Special Thanks to the Miskatonic Arcane Archive.

Director Statement

Upon the recent discovery of this rare Promotional Reel for the planned 1964 feature release of "Herbert West: Reanimator", Jeff was honored to act as Preservation Curator. As a life-long fan of H.P. Lovecraft and the films of Vincent Price, Jeff worked in concert with the Miskatonic Arcane Archive to preserve and partially restore this unusual artifact of early H.P. Lovecraft cinema horror. Although clearly a mid-1960s cinematic oddity mixing horror with weird humor, this extant version surprisingly adheres closely to the 1922 Lovecraft short story. The bizarre history of the thought to be lost feature film version of "Herbert West: Reanimator" is still being unearthed.
