Writer Statement

From a young age, horror has been a genre favorite. Despite the fact that I would need to shield my eyes for the first few years of my immersion, I could not get myself away from the feeling that horror provides. Especially as a queer man, horror has always provided a sense of safety in the danger of it all and it quickly gained a special, permanent place in my heart as I grew into my identity.

While creative writing has always been a strong suit of mine and I have dabbled in screenwriting throughout my years, House of Flies marks my first completed feature length project born from a nightmare.

As I hammered out the first draft the same evening I woke from the nightmare, I was really drawn to dark electronic Americana music that helped me set the mood and the stage for what was to come. Upon reading, it will come as no surprise that I was deeply inspired by cabin in the woods horror and it is essentially a love letter to the subgenre, as Evil Dead was all I heard about growing up in Tennessee and my first true love of the genre. As I began navigating this newly created world, I found myself exploring my own fears surrounding being stuck in my past and how detrimental it can be for me. As I read it back, I found myself liberated from said fear as I finally took back the control of my present and future.

The result, I've been told, is an incredibly fun, effectively terrifying, and sharp witted tale of closure and letting go and I am excited to share it with the world.
