Stigma

Like the part of a flower pistil that germinates after receiving pollen, stigma about HIV in Indonesia also develops and reproduces through the messages represented in the media. This film shows a small collection of stigma regarding HIV since its emergence in Indonesia in the 1980s until now. The result is a dramatic and comical picture of HIV that forms the stigma of HIV as a scourge in Indonesian society.

Director Statement

I have been involved in research projects on HIV in Indonesia since 2013 and my dissertation investigated alternative modes in documentary media production and distribution to highlight the paradoxes of HIV advocacy in Indonesia from the perspective of media ecology. This film was born out of my anxiety about the representation of HIV in the Indonesian mainstream media, which unfortunately has not changed much since the 1980s until now.
