Director Biography - Alexandros Marakis - Bourkas

My name is Alexandros Marakis-Bourkas. I am an actor, a musician and a poet and I have directed the short film “High with my dresses”and the theatrical monologue "Spots of time" inspired by Cavafy poetry.

I was 19 years old when my theatrical journey began. For the last 7 years I have worked professionally in the field of classical repertoire (Ivanov by Chekhov, directed by Angela Brouskou), as well as contemporary works (Monster, directed by Michalis Kaliotsos) and children’s theater (various plays directed by Carmen Rougeri).

I have also made some appearances on television and have been involved in music as a singer, a pianist and a vocal teacher. At the age of 19, I was a soloist with members of the Athens State Orchestra in Mozart's "Coronation Mass”.

Director Statement

The film is dedicated to Dimitra of Lesvos ( a person who existed) the main source of my inspiration… Her life(wanted to change and be a woman and her family didnt accept this) and as well as her wrongful death were the two main reasons behind the need to write a poem for her.. This poem is an outburst of emotions not only for this tormented human being but also for everyone not embraced and respected for who they are. Some very important imformations you have to know about Dimitra of Lesvos. Dimitris Kalogiannis was born in 1957.He was brought up in Skala Sykamia Lesvos. Since he was 14 years old, he felt "different" and confessed to his parents that she was a woman. Her parents sent her to a psyhiatric center. When she was back to her village, her parents, following the doctors advice, gave her medicine in her food. Dimitra loved her parents. Her life was a hell. As a result she tried to commit a suicide several times. At the age of 20 she went to Athens but everybody ignored her. She wanted to have her own family so as to feel the pure love. When her mother got siriously ill, Dimitra retuerned to her village where she actually took care of her mother for 25 years. The closed, blindfolded society of her village kept gossiping and insylting her. When her mother died, she started wearing dresses, which made her feel a consummated human being. In December 2020 she fell victim of harassment in her own house. On 10th June, 2021, Dimitra fell victim of a fatal car accident. The car driver abandonded her and dissapear

The main idea behind the film and the messages we wanted to pass on were expressed by the lyrics of the poems, Dimitra’s dance, images, the landscape, the sea, the sense of freedom, and the words of the executioner.
