Kai Tattersall (b. Okinawa, Japan) is a Japanese American
director and animator, working with machine intelligence to
combine live-action and animation. He currently resides in Los
Angeles, California, where he works as a director with ARTI
studios to produce music videos and visual pieces that utilize new approaches to incorporate technology into film and animation. Tattersall has been mentored by Mike Patterson, a pioneer in animation who created Aha’s ground-breaking music video Take On Me.
Tattersall’s body of work centers around the use of machines to
copy nature. He explores the limits of what can be achieved
through visual sampling using technology at the forefront of
development. Tattersall is intrigued by the ways machines can
understand and translate the aesthetics of nature and create a
new immersive environment that treads the uncanny cross-section between familiar and digital.
Kai Tattersall’s works have been featured in IMAX, VR, and as
gallery installations across the country. The research he
spearheaded has been presented at both University of Southern
California’s directed study program, and University of California
Santa Cruz’s Digital Scholarship Symposium.
