Gwylvos; Forests Beneath the Waves
Beneath the turbulent waters of Cornwall, a stone's throw from the shore, are lush meadows, deep valleys and vast forests bursting with life and colour. Filmmaker Matt Biggs spent 14 months free diving amongst the towering Kelp plants documenting their growth and destruction as warm nutrient rich summer currents give way to violent winter storms.
The film features an original score created by some of the most talented musicians currently working in North Devon.

Matt began his career as an artist and illustrator and became a full-time filmmaker in 2004. In 2005 he set up Artaura Productions. He has filmed in places such as Athens, Bratislava, Warsaw and New York but it is in rugged North Devon that he draws his inspiration. His work to date includes: short films, documentaries, music videos, features and VFX work. Matt grew up in the mountains of Wales. In his early twenties he got the surfing bug and relocated to North Devon. Matt’s passion for the ocean goes back to early childhood.
“I can still remember as an 8 year old boy donning a snorkel and mask for the first time and swimming around Logan’s Rock in Cornwall. To this day I still get the same buzz every time I enter the water.”
Matt began taking underwater photos in 2005 but it is only in the last few years, with high quality video equipment becoming more affordable, that Matt has begun shooting film underwater.
“For a cinematographer interested in composition and movement, the possibilities of filming underwater are endless.”
Matt has used underwater shots in previous drama and documentary projects but this is the first film he has made where the whole story takes place beneath the surface. In the past Matt has spent many hours photographing the ocean while scuba diving but for this recent piece he has dispensed with the cumbersome air cylinders in favour of free diving.
“The sort of film I planned to make would have been almost impossible to shoot scuba diving. Free diving gives you so much more flexibility in the water, and allowed me to be spontaneous in terms of times and locations”. Said Matt
The first challenge was to build a camera rig that would be stable and also flexible enough to work in confined spaces and rough seas. The majority of the film was shot on the North coast of Cornwall, where even in the middle of summer, the ocean is rarely completely calm and access to suitable locations often involves long hikes on foot.
“The North Coast is an extremely challenging environment to dive and film in! So many factors have to come together in order to get suitable conditions, but when they do you enter a fascinating world of giant granite rock formations and swirling Kelp patrolled by shoals of Sea Bass.” Said Matt.
