Director Statement

I first shaved my hair in 2020 in an attempt of finding identity and out of pure curiosity. The act itself did in many ways seem extremely powerful and violent to me. Never before did I feel as vulnerable and exposed as I did with the hair off. When I started writing for „Growing Pains“, i knew that the act of shaving hair would have to be a key moment in the story.

As viewers, we take a glimpse into the life of a young couple spending an evening in their bathroom. Although we don’t know what exactly happened between them, the tension in the room becomes more and more tangible.
Suddenly the spell breaks. In a short but physical fight it becomes obvious that she is yearning for his forgiveness while he is not yet ready to forget about it. She knows it will take a bigger sacrifice for them to become one again. In the heat of passion, she grabs a razor and turns around, shaving off her hair infront of his eyes.
When the both face each other with their bald heads they look more alike then ever. They have not healed yet, but they meet at eye level again.

Since the storyline was very personal to us, and I knew that my boyfriend and I would star ourselves, I preferred a small and trustworthy team. Working closely together with my own brother and friends therefore suggested itself. I feel very fortunate that we were able to create this short film as a team, especially during a Pandemic that was undeniably quite challenging for everyone.
