Beginning at Anthology Film Archives New York City, DD has made three publicly screened short films. The third of these, “Together!” (2009) was acclaimed and toured globally, including at Slamdance and Melbourne IFF. DD's latest film, "Granny X" (2022), contributes its investigations into impermanence and taboo.
DD was active in the late nineties California music scene and is civilly unioned since then with LA punk novelist Thorn Kief Hillsbery, forever linking their work with that of the Situationists.
DD puts unempowered, flawed lives center stage, demonstrating how beauty survives in the moment. From an early age DD trained in music and puts sound and music at the forefront of their presentations, films that test the dimensions of the personal, packing a sneak attack of philosophy in their cartoon wrappers.
A nursing home resident achieves liberation, in the only way she can. Granny X is an antihero's awakening, a million mile redemption fantasy arriving at a hard truth: we need our dreams to lie to us.
Every aspect of Granny X is a ten-year solo effort by DD Sheahan, with voice credits shared with the great Mary Murphy.
Granny X is a 4K film in English with brief strobing lights.
This is DD's "breakout" film, in which the conventions of short cartoons are broken to achieve a cosmic bafflement. It is also DD's "breakup" from the do-it-all-yourself-one-frame-at-a-time filmmaking method, and features a prominent, original soundtrack.
Granny X screened at (among others) Annecy International Animation Festival's "WTF" section, Woodstock Film Festival, and at the London International Animation Festival, in 2023.
