David Vincent Smith is an award-winning Western Australian writer and director. His latest proof-of-concept short film I’M NOT HURTING YOU, premiered at Sydney Film Festival, and went on to screen at numerous local and international film festivals including Flickerfest and Austin Film Festival. The feature script was awarded Screenwest's West Coast Vision funding and will go into production in 2022; the team have been working with script editor Lynne Vincent McCarthy (THE NIGHTINGALE, THE FURNACE, RELIC) on the latest draft.
In 2016, David was a recipient of Screenwest’s Feature Navigator program, a year-long initiative designed to develop future feature filmmakers. As a part of the program, he spent three months in Serbia as the Director’s Attachment on Netflix’s twenty-million-dollar sci-fi film EXTINCTION.
David’s other accolades include: FEATHERWEIGHT (written by David and directed by Sam Lara), which screened at Sydney Film Festival, Melbourne International Film Festival, Flickerfest and more; his short film WE WERE HERE was awarded Best Film, Best Director, Best Cinematography and Best Actress at the WA Screen Awards; he was nationally recognized by MTV for two pilot concepts he wrote, directed and edited; and, his music video Merewif was awarded Gold at the ACS awards and the Cliff Ellis Memorial Award.
In 2013, David received directing training from acclaimed tutor Judith Weston in Los Angeles whose students include Best Picture Oscar winner Steve McQueen (12 YEARS A SLAVE) and Alejandro González Iñárritu director of THE REVENANT and BIRDMAN.
Recently, David directed three videos for the WA Museum to celebrate its opening and directed the headline act, BILYA BENEATH, for Perth’s International Art Festival.
