Writer Statement

This was my first Feature screenplay, and it was a real surprise to see it shortlisted in the first competition it was entered in! I've loved looking at how young people - back then, at least - coped with the stress of war. It's often the soldiers on the front line that the movies focus on, but on a scaled down level, we never get to see how the horror of war affects us ethically. As children, the stabs at the morals we've been taught to govern our lives can be fatal, and yet defining. Through the youngest soldiers, the story explores how they must decide between themselves and others; living and surviving; the battle field and, as the title suggests, home.
