Glasses started because I wanted the challenge of making a film no other 2nd year had ever tried making. The main character to be someone - not my age, ethnicity, or background. However, finding the core of the story took me a bit of time and I had to dig deep.
Growing up, I had never witnessed my parents fighting. Not even once. That’s impossible right? Every time I stay over at my friend’s place, that’s all their parents used to do. Pots and pans flying everywhere, sometimes with curry in it. Sometimes with rice. It got me thinking whether I had suppressed memories of my parents fighting. And that’s where it started.
Opening a can of worms, but not knowing that it’s a can. Or it has worms in it. That’s what Glasses is about. I didn’t approach writing this film like it was my first (it is). I approached it like it was my last. Everyone watching it should be able to relate to it. Everyone should be able to put on a pair of glasses and be a child again.
I wanted my audience to see the world through Sky’s eyes, because they were once that kid. A kid that believed clouds were made of cotton candy and brown cows produced chocolate milk. This kid, Sky, sees his entire world falling apart. He doesn’t realise it but we do. We aren’t kids anymore, some of us will become parents one day. Some already are. I wish we can give a better world for our kids to live in. One that doesn’t need glasses to be put on.
