2025 has been declared the International Year of Glaciers' Preservation (IYGP) by the United Nations General Assembly.

This global initiative, co-facilitated by UNESCO and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), aims to:

Raise awareness about the critical role glaciers play in the climate system and water cycle.

Highlight the urgent challenges posed by accelerated glacier melt due to climate change.

Mobilize governments, scientific institutions, the private sector, and civil society to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and implement adaptation strategies.

Additionally, starting in 2025, March 21st has been designated as the annual World Day for Glaciers.

Mark has followed up last year's award-winning short doc Marilyn the Bookworm with this year's short doc entry--Glaciers: Nature's Resilient Water Towers.
"For generations, glaciers have stood as silent sentinels, vast and seemingly immutable, providing the lifeblood for rivers, ecosystems, and billions of people worldwide," said Mark. " Yet, as our planet warms at an unprecedented rate, these majestic 'water towers' are receding, revealing a stark and urgent truth: what we once considered permanent is now profoundly vulnerable."
Officially endorsed by the Uniter Nations, "Glaciers" production took Mark to some of the remotest corners of the world, including the Himalayas. "Glaciers" has been honored by the Academy of Film Archive (AFA).

For generations, glaciers have stood as silent sentinels, vast and seemingly immutable, providing the lifeblood for rivers, ecosystems, and billions of people worldwide. Yet, as our planet warms at an unprecedented rate, these majestic "water towers" are receding, revealing a stark and urgent truth: what we once considered permanent is now profoundly vulnerable.

My fascination with glaciers began not just with their awe-inspiring beauty, but with their critical role in the global water cycle. "Glaciers: Nature's Resilient Water Towers" was born from a desire to move beyond the alarmist headlines and delve into the intricate relationship between these icy giants, the landscapes they shape, and the communities that depend on their steady flow. This film is an exploration of both profound loss and remarkable adaptation.

We journeyed to remote corners of the world, from the towering peaks of the Himalayas to the dramatic fjords of Patagonia, to witness firsthand the impact of climate change. But more than just documenting retreat, we sought to understand the resilience – both of the natural world and of the human spirit. We met scientists racing against time to measure and predict changes, indigenous communities whose ancient ways of life are intimately tied to glacial melt, and individuals finding innovative solutions to manage dwindling water resources. Their stories, often untold, are at the heart of this film.

My stylistic approach was to immerse the audience in the grandeur and fragility of these environments. Through breathtaking cinematography, intimate human stories, and clear scientific explanation, I aimed to create a film that is not only visually stunning but also deeply moving and informative. We deliberately chose to juxtapose the immense scale of the glaciers with the personal stories of those whose lives are directly impacted, highlighting the global consequences of a local phenomenon.

The challenges were immense – navigating treacherous terrains, adapting to rapidly changing weather, and grappling with the sheer emotional weight of witnessing such significant environmental shifts. Yet, every obstacle reinforced the urgency and importance of this story.

My hope for "Glaciers: Nature's Resilient Water Towers" is to inspire more than just awareness. I want viewers to truly feel the vital connection between these distant ice masses and their own lives, no matter where they reside. This film is a call to action, a testament to the fact that while the glaciers face an uncertain future, our collective capacity for innovation, adaptation, and responsible stewardship remains our most powerful resource. It is a reminder that we are all interconnected by the flow of water, and that the fate of these magnificent water towers ultimately rests in our hands.
