Director Statement

"Girly boy" is a semi-autobiographical coming-of-age film that draws inspiration from personal experiences and interactions with my estranged aunt. Set against the backdrop of a suburban summer day, the story follows 11-year-old Connor as he learns
the art of self-assertion under the supervision of his abrasive aunt. All the while conquering his fear of the deep end of the pool.

"Girly boy" aims to portray the transient joys and profound struggles of youth within the context of an imperfect America. Amidst moments of levity, Connor will navigate through uncomfortable situations, reflecting the intricate complexities of life.

In crafting "Girly boy," my aim was to evoke the nostalgic ambiance of suburban upbringing. Filmed in the San Fernando Valley of Southern California, amidst rows of identical tract homes, the visuals of "Girly boy" radiate warmth and softness, inviting the
audience to immerse themselves in Connor's perspective. This visual approach serves to accentuate the innocence through which children perceive the world. Utilizing handheld camera techniques and close-up shots, the film endeavors to forge a deep emotional connection between the audience and Connor as he traverses through his experiences.
