GIPSY KINGS featuring Tonino Baliardo

Discovered by Brigitte Bardot while busking on the beaches of Saint-Tropez, a Romani gypsy guitarist from Catalan musical lineage forms the Gipsy Kings, and turns a marginalised culture into a global music phenomenon.

Joel Van der Molen’s Gipsy Kings featuring Tonino Baliardo is a portrait of the family behind the Gipsy Kings and the music that turned Catalan gypsy heritage into a global music phenomenon. From busking on the beaches of Saint-Tropez to amassing billions of streams and downloads worldwide, the journey of Tonino Baliardo and the Gipsy Kings is a story of resilience, identity, and family.

Born into a Catalan Gypsy musical lineage rooted in the south of France, Tonino inherits a tradition shaped by his uncle, the revolutionary guitarist Manitas de Plata, who performed alongside José Reyes, the father of Nicolás Reyes. From this foundation emerged the Gipsy Kings, carrying Spanish-language music across borders and into the global mainstream.

Through rare access, electrifying performances, and candid reflection, this is not only the story of a legendary band, but a musical bloodline and a culture refusing to fade.

Director Statement

I’ve always been drawn to human stories that live at the intersection of identity, resilience, and culture. After making Gypsy Billionaire, the #1 Amazon Prime documentary, I felt there was more to explore within the gypsy world. Stories that challenge perception and reveal the humanity behind the headlines. Meeting Tonino Baliardo opened the door to a narrative not just about music, but about legacy: how a family protects its heritage and carries it forward through sound.

Tonino’s journey reflects the experience of many Romani families: growing up on the margins while holding onto a rich artistic tradition that the wider world often misunderstood. What struck me immediately was the power of the music itself. There is a soul in their sound that feels unlike anything else; raw, joyful, and deeply human. It’s this emotional honesty that allows their music to transcend language and borders, turning a local tradition into a global phenomenon.

Watching Tonino invite his sons into the music is witnessing a living lineage. The stage becomes a family table; the guitar becomes a language spoken across generations. That continuity moved me profoundly.

As a filmmaker, I wanted to step beyond the mythology of fame and into the private space where legacy is built. The performances are electric, but the quiet moments in the recording studio of their new album Historia, in conversations, and in shared memories, reveal the true heart of the story. This is a portrait of a father, an artist, and a culture refusing to fade.

During the making of the film, the passing of Paco Baliardo, Tonino’s brother, and a founding member of the Gipsy Kings, added another emotional layer. His absence is felt throughout the story, and the film stands in part as a tribute to his memory. It reminds us that legacy is fragile, and that preserving it is an act of love.

Ultimately, this documentary is about the sound of a family echoing into the future. It is about how music can outlive hardship, stigma, and even time itself. I hope audiences feel not only the rhythm, but the humanity behind it.
