Gigi-Myomyo

기기묘묘(Gigi-Myomyo)
With the energy of a Korean cleansing shaman ritual, an installation was constructed at an Iron factory in Yangju, Gyeonggi-do using unwanted waste material from the factory. The installation which measured 18m high and 4m wide, was constructed with help from employees of the factory.
The projected aims to change the factory workers, and wider populations, perspective on what is usable/valuable, regardless of its past, name, or intended use.
The shamanic visuals and sounds are used to cleanse the old material of it’s past, and present it with new life.
The project took place and was filmed from March - September of 2021.

Director Biography - Kyungmin Kim

In my work activities, the expression 'art' has two meanings.  One is to feel social problems more than anyone else and actively voice them, and the second is to suggest that there are blind spots exposed to social risks without safety devices. In that sense, for me, art plays a role in helping me swim in anxiety lurking between reality and the future, explore reality from various perspectives, and take a walk in the fog of anxiety.
With the beginning of the Covid Pandemic, anxiety raised the question of "Is art necessary for living?" and the question led me to a social-environment-human exploration. Through this opportunity, I have been looking and exploring things that pass by and are neglected from a micro perspective. In the process, work continues on everything that lives in the continuity of instability. The submitted work <Gigi-Myomyo> persuaded workers to make materials such as iron and wood discarded in factories away from the city into a large media screen together. After the large screen was completed, they greeted the residents to say goodbye to things that disappeared through audio and visualization performances, like a 굿 in Korea(shaman ritual)
ceremonie.

This work was made of waste products that had to be discarded, so it was demolished by the factory owner three months later. Through "Gigi-Myomyo" I look at familiar things differently and extend lives for a while to creatures that are abandoned. And as an elegant extinction beyond criticism and vainness and a new beginning-BEGIN AGAIN-, my work tries to explore art in life.
