Director Statement

Styled after 90s fantasy shows a la Charmed and Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Ghost Woman is a taste of family-friendly drama. The story is confined and focused on the characters' interpersonal relationships. At the same time, sound design and score take viewers beyond the immediate circumstances to the imaginings of a lush fantasy world.

LGBTQ people and storylines, particularly QTBIPOC, have long been left out of the fantasy genre, and Ghost Woman answers this with a starring role for a queer woman of color who is seen on screen in a relationship with another queer woman of color. And in a snub to Dead Lesbian Syndrome, both queer characters survive this short film.

This fantastical realm is planted in American soil by contextualizing Myrica and Grace's family history in a country long divided by race. In life, Grace was a black woman married to a white man before interracial marriage was recognized nationwide. This is echoed by her great-granddaughter Myrica, who is queer and has a girlfriend. This young couple lives in contemporary America, where nationwide same-sex marriage equality is in its infancy and states continue to fight against the legislation.
