Ghetto Blues

Ghetto Blues is a movie about the painful life of a young lady OKWE (24), who is caught in a love triangle in which OLD SOLDIER (60) pressurizes his girlfriend, ONOME(45), to convince her silently bitter daughter, to marry his educated young and upward bound son, PETER (24), whom Okwe rejects in favour of PAUL (24), an ex-convict who served five years in prison for raping Okwe. Paul spends time quality time, at work and after work, with Okwe, building a relationship of true love and genuine support for her, while Peter, on the other hand, spends time and money, engaging spiritualism and family influence as he skims to win Okwe over and marry her against her will. Pushed to the wall, Okwe snaps mentally and calls of her relationship with Paul as she made up her mind to go for a revenge.

Director Statement

Working with my screenwriting protégés, trained at my film school, Asaba Film Academy, the screenplay for Ghetto Blues came out of a collaboration effort, which I had the privilege to lead in the capacity of the Head Writer and subsequently, improve on as a Script Doctor. In my official capacity, I can tell you that Ghetto Blues was inspired by the desire to tell a story that would resonate with the Nigerian/African people. We wanted to tell a story the average Nollywood films enthusiasts could watch and identify with, associating the character roles with their neighbors, friends and family members.
As a concerned citizen of Nigeria, I was rudely awakened to reality, when in the course of researching the story idea, I found out that some parents in the present day Nigeria, exploit their female children at different levels of coded prostitution, as a result of the economic hardship they face in the country. For the same reason, some other parents enroll their male children in dubious apprenticeship programs designed to train their young minds in the illegal vocation of deception, in the anticipation that successful trainees will engage in the business of defrauding people and businesses, at home and abroad, at the completion of their training.
Wearing my Director's cap as a Hollywood-trained and award-winning Director, commissioned to execute this film project, Ghetto Blues, I could tell you that Ghetto Blues would resonate with the Nollywood films enthusiasts around the world. Working with Nollywood veterans and my acting protégés, trained at my film school, Asaba Film Academy, I spent 14 days and nights, toiling in a ghetto community, called Okwe, because I wanted to achieve the essence of the film, capturing the most realistic true feel and tone of the storyline. I worked with ultra-low film budget to achieve quality performance on quality motion pictures.
Ghetto Blues, is about PAUL (24), gagged with a blood oath, OKWE (24), shackled with financial insecurity and PETER (24), who sets out to wrestle Okwe away from Paul, when he rapes Okwe and manipulates his father to ensure that Paul goes to jail for the crime, but Okwe eventually pushes back, determined to kill Peter as she had promised, if he abused her again.
