Evelyn Jude Rodrigues is an Indian, aspiring filmmaker and producer based in Dubai, United Arab Emirates. Her fascination for cinema began from a very young age by watching Indian films. This fascination became her passion, which she now pursues as her profession.
During film school, she has garnered experience in multiple roles. While she has directed and produced documentaries, short films and a commercial for a well-known brand, she also is technically sound in editing and sound design.
Recently graduated from Middlesex University Dubai, she desires to make “slice-of-life” films while producing out-of-the-box stories for different directors. Moreover, she also wants to learn more about visual aesthetics and hopefully, she will don the hat of a cinematographer soon.
I chose to direct Ghar as it is metaphorically based on my own life. I had lost all hope and confidence in becoming a director. I let people’s opinions about me take over my thoughts, to the point I believed that I wasn’t good enough. Hence, I decided to not direct in my final year of university.
However, a beaming light seeped into my life, my mom. She pushed me to take the leap of faith, let go of the past and find the beauty in my brokenness.
That’s how Isaac’s story came along. He belongs to a dysfunctional, broken family and has lived his life lingering on to the past. How Naomi, his music teacher, becomes the catalyst to let go, forms the crux of the story.
We surfaced many challenges while making Ghar. Firstly, I had to make it look and feel like the vibrant Goa while filming in the U.A.E. We pulled through by getting locations that provided the old-world charm that Goa exhibits in today’s day and age. Secondly, since this film is a musical drama, creating the original track wasn’t a piece of cake. The song is an integral part as it binds the film together, while telling the story of Isaac’s pain. And the making of it was a struggle that came to fruition after 5 long months, with an amazing team of my composer and lyricist.
While watching this film, I want the audience to see the beauty that Isaac experiences after his first meeting with Naomi, and I hope that somewhere down the line, touches them to find beauty in their brokenness too.
And finally, this film is a tribute to both my parents. To my father, who taught me the melodies of life. And to my mother, who brought this melody, Ghar, to life.
