Brianna (she/her) always dreamt of a career in film and television, but she became a geochemist and a politician instead. In her ongoing pursuit of making the world a better place, she is sharing parts of her historic political story with the world to entertain, teach, and engage more people in politics. She's the first trans state legislator in Colorado and one of the first 4 in the US.
Jesse Collier Sutterley (he/him) is a documentary film director and editor from the San Francisco Bay Area. Sutterley was the editor of the award-winning feature, Ultimate Sacrifices: Cpt. Jennifer Moreno and award-winning film From Mexico To Vietnam, as well as a handful of short films, Ruiz, Velda: A Mother’s Story of Suicide to name a few. His work has mainly focused on the human experience around grief and loss.
Brianna has always been a creative person. Ever since age 5 year when she fashioned a dog out of chewing gum, she’s been writing, drawing, painting, and filming. She has always wanted to make a profound positive impact on society, but didn’t know what that looked like. Being an elected official was a happy surprise of fulfilling her dream but she didn’t want to stop there. After a few years of legislative work, and fully understanding how disengaged the public was with her work, she had a thought: there was no depiction of state politics in entertainment. Let’s be honest. Most government stuff is boring and seems like a performance to cover the truth. By sharing elements of her political career, the issues, and the personalities in government, she envisioned a new way of helping society - by making consuming government activities more fun. She began compiling stories inspired by her life and her colleagues’ to tell a story of government. She knows that projects like these can leave a positive mark on society maybe even more than the work itself.
Jesse first worked with Brianna on a documentary project about her. The documentary turned into his Master’s project at SF State. While filming the doc, he encouraged Brianna to also film her fiction. The Documentary is still in progress and is planning on incorporating elements of the fiction into the film to highlight the many sides of Brianna’s personality. Using his film knowledge, he has been advising Brianna on this project to be sure her first project has a professional and elegant look.
