GYPSIES to ROMA - Bruce Dales Fifty-Year Reunion
In 1969, while on assignment for National Geographic, I traveled 13,000 miles by car, from England to India, retracing the route Gypsies (now called Roma) took from the homeland they left over 1,000 years ago. Along the way, I visited and documented various clans in over 13 countries for the book, “Gypsies, Wanderers of the World.”
I have always wondered what has become of the people in my pictures, and how their lives may have changed. Starting in 2019, I made several trips back to Hungary and Romania looking for them. This is story about my search, and what I have learned.

Bruce Dale had an early start in photography with over 50 photographs published in Cleveland, Ohio newspapers before his graduation from High School. He worked as a medical photographer for the Cleveland Clinic, joined the Toledo Blade newspaper at 19 and worked there seven years before joining the National Geographic staff where he stayed for thirty years.
His versatility ranges from anthropology to highly technical work such as holography and mounting remote cameras on the vertical stabilizer of a jumbo jet to make in-flight photos. After having over two thousand photographs published in National Geographic during travels in over 80 countries Bruce left to pursue a combination of advertising, journalism and teaching. Recognitions include twice named Magazine Photographer of the Year, 1989 White House Photographer of the Year, and honors for his digital work from the Smithsonian Institution. Books on Gypsies, American Mountain People, The American Southwest, and a collection of artistic landscape images contribute to his portfolio.
