Futility
The manager of a suburban swim club gets called into work on his day off. Behaviors that inhibit the club inspire the manager to draft a narrative film that diminishes the glowing allure of idolater culture. All while attempting to transcend beyond notions of desire, expectation, and the physical body.

Avant-garde video-maker, intermedia artist and film theorist (Givens) grew up in Farmington Hills, MI USA; born 1/3/1992.
Givens, a lifelong learner of Cinema has enjoyed theatre since attending summer camps as a child at the Marquis Theatre in downtown Northville, MI. In seventh grade, Givens came to terms with her gender identity but kept it a secret until the age of 25.
In 2014, Givens graduated from Binghamton University with Honors in Cinema and was the Ken Jacobs Scholarship recipient.
Givens has garnered recent success with her film "Agility (..or something like it)" which made its in-person debut and North American Premiere at the Urban Arts Festival in Dallas, Texas on August, 11th 2023. "Agility..." was Winner of Best Experimental Film at the Ideal International Film Festival (India) 2023 and Best Experimental Short Film at the Bettiah International Film Festival (India) 2024.
This film was my debut feature and undergraduate Senior Thesis project in 2014. The only changes made to the ten year anniversary cut were the opening and ending credits.
The film was originally meant to be a Coming of Age of film about my first romantic heartbreak but soon transformed into a work about interpersonal problems with my classmates at school while completing the film.
The film touches on themes such as virtue, sin, loss/gain of innocence, art as commodity and technical mechanical reproduction, idolatry, and desire.
The film is an experimental narrative structure that utilizes stylistic elements of first person documentary and Film Noir. The voiceover of the Narrator/Manager character soon dominates the tone of the film and engulfs one in a world of suburban teenage angst. Multiple filmic (Rebel Without a Cause, Sunset Blvd.) and literary (Great Gatsby, Catcher in the Rye) references are made to further bolster the complex depth of the protagonist.
Through the trials and tribulations of emotional suffering, healing, one questions whether telling their story was worth it. Was there enough catharsis to cultivate Images of triumph or was it all just a fruitless exercise in Futility?
