๐๐ณ๐ฐ๐ฎ ๐ต๐ฉ๐ฆ ๐๐ข๐ช๐ณ ๐ต๐ฐ ๐ต๐ฉ๐ฆ ๐๐ฐ๐ถ๐ญ was inspired by the life of my mother, Lavon Berry. She is my inspiration, my role model, and one of my best friends. She has always lived her life with such purpose and intentionality, and her dedication and work ethic is a big reason why I am who I am today.
When given the task to shoot one documentary over the course of a single semester, I was a bit stumped. As director of the project, my vision was based on the idea I pitched in the first week of my senior documentary production class. My initial idea had not fallen through, and it was a stressful time as my crew was in danger of falling behind in the production process. It was then that I decided to call my Mother, Lavon, and asked if she would be open to being the subject of my film. She provided me with the reassurance that she would do anything to make things easy for me, and it was then that I realized I had somewhat overlooked the perfect story that was so very close to home for me.
My mother has been a cosmetologist for my entire life, and for the longest time I didnโt fully understand what that truly looked like for her. I remember going to work with her some days as a toddler, experiencing her wonderful clients and seeing her in her element. However, it wasnโt until I got older that I started to realize how much of a beautiful business she had established. I started to realize how much intention she puts into her work, and how so much of that same intention had always been put into her family. She began to inspire me as I ventured into my own entrepreneurial journey, and showed me just how important it is to reach a personโs soul in the work that I do. Her passion for hair and using it to build lifelong relationships with other women has always been the example I had to look up to. It all came into a full circle moment as I decided to use my gifts to highlight that very thing for everyone to see. This film is her legacy, and a gift from me to her.
