Experiencing Interruptions?

Friedrich Plahl (1926 - 2018)

Portrait of a still quite unknown austrian artist who set new standards in regard to realistic figurative paiting. His european background was inspired among others by the Californian Golden Bay Area Movement with painters like Richard Diebenkorn, David Park, Elmer Bischoff or James Week, artists that had not yet been arrived when Friedrich Plahl got to meet them during his studies at the School of Fine Arts S. F. in 1958/59.
Plahls first posthumous retrospective exhibition took place 2022 in the City Museum of Bruneck in South Tirol, Italy.

Director Statement

Still life, nude, landscape, the traditional genre forms, offered Plahl the opportunity to develop an abstracting pictorial language in contact with simple and obvious motifs, which does not focus on details, but clarifies spatial references. The choice of traditional, unspectacular subjects also reveals a worldview that sees beauty in the simple and the true in the living.
