Born and raised in Guayaquil, Ecuador, Dani Sadun is a student filmmaker best known for her works in animated films. Pandemia (2020) was the first short-film she directed followed by A Story of Amore (2021) a year later, both films in which she was responsible for designing and animating the entire work on her own. Dani’s films have earned several festival recognitions, including the official selection of Pandemia (2020) to the Ottawa International Animation Festival.
With Frida, we seek to challenge the lack of Latino representation in the film industry while subverting common stereotypes Latin Americans face. The film is, however, set in the city of Toronto, the city where Lauren grew up and welcomed Dani with open arms. We wanted to set Frida’s story in this multicultural and unique city that has shaped both of our lives and, without a doubt, deserves more celebration in film.
The depiction of women in this film has great importance to us. Our goal with Frida is to present a young female protagonist that is resilient, intelligent, and sweet. This film is meant for families and children; with this story, we want to inspire the little girls in the audience that they can achieve whatever they set their minds to.
